UAH: Ukraine operates a "managed flexibility" exchange-rate regime: the National Bank of Ukraine intervenes in the interbank foreign-exchange market to cover the war-driven structural shortage of foreign currency and smooth excessive swings, while letting the hryvnia move in both directions rather than holding a fixed rate. The NBU introduced this regime in October 2023, replacing the exchange-rate peg it had imposed at the outbreak of Russia's full-scale invasion, as a transitional step toward a fully floating exchange rate under conventional inflation targeting. JPY: The yen has floated freely since February 1973, its exchange rate determined by market supply and demand. Japan's Minister of Finance is legally authorized to conduct foreign exchange intervention to stabilize the rate, which the Bank of Japan executes as the ministry's agent.
