CLP: Chile has operated a floating exchange rate since 1999, when the Banco Central de Chile abandoned its earlier exchange-rate band system; the central bank's own account of the reform states that the peso's value "floats in the market and adjusts automatically to external shocks." The same 1999 reform introduced an inflation-targeting framework, with a target of 3% annual inflation over a two-year policy horizon, as the anchor for monetary policy in place of any exchange-rate objective. CAD: The Canadian dollar floats freely: the Bank of Canada states that the flexible exchange rate, or floating dollar, permits an independent monetary policy aimed at its 2% inflation-control target, and that the dollar's value is not fixed to any other currency or to gold. The dollar has floated continuously since 31 May 1970.
